Flooding in my basement meant big trouble.

The drywall had been removed up to the water line but the appliances down there still held water inside them.

During the huge storms last week we ran into a problem that we never had before. The rains, winds and storm surge sent a foot of water rushing into my basement. We had been warned that this may happen so we moved all of the furniture and such upstairs. Unfortunately, there are many things that can not be moved. Those things are some of the most expensive things that we own. Our boiler, hot water tank, and the indoor unit for the air conditioner are all installed down there. The floodwaters surrounded them and they sat with a foot of water for two days. When we finally got the water pumped out I knew that I needed to call my HVAC company to come check things out. Before we could turn the power back on I wanted to make sure that it was safe to do so. We weren’t the only ones with these issues so it took another two days before a repair technician could come out. By that time, the whole basement smelled of musty old rags. The drywall had been removed up to the water line but the appliances down there still held water inside them. The HVAC technician didn’t have good news. He said that even if we were able to dry the systems out, we should consider replacing them because of the damage from water and debris that would have gotten inside during the flood. I was glad that we had an emergency fund set aside but not happy that I needed to spend it all at once.
