Elegant furniture doesn’t work for every house

My mom lives in an absolutely nice neighborhood in the southern part of the country. And most of the houses in her area keep a formal room that is just for show. Some of my moms’ neighbors have even paid interior designers to help to decorate these spaces. These formal rooms are normally off limits to adolescents & only used to entertain special guests. In fact, some people don’t use their formal rooms at all. I don’t feel my mom uses hers either, I have never really sat inside that space for too long. It’s not comfortable because the charming furniture & the accent pieces resemble something out of a high end fashion magazine. I feel it’s superb that my mom has this charming furniture in their condo because it does make the room feel sophisticated, but something like this would not work in my house. For one, I have adolescents & there is no way I would be able to keep them away from any 1 room. Secondly, I like my condo to feel like a house & when people come over, I need them to be as comfortable as possible in all the rooms of my house. An charming room doesn’t scream comfort, it’s a room where you have to be careful not to scratch the wood, or spill something or cause any detriment to furniture. Of course, this is just my opinion & that classic elegance look can work for several people with an odd lifestyle. Perhaps one day I too will change my perspective about having charming furniture in my humble home. Possibly when the adolescents are grown & have left my condo for good.
