The house was frigid, the day gloomy, and all I wanted to do was go back to bed.
But I couldn’t live in a house without heat or running water, and the more I thought about my absent friend, the angrier I grew.
I dug out the only phone but couldn’t get a signal. I’d have to go after John myself, and that meant doing the climb to his house. It was quite the trek, but I had no choice. When I arrived, John was on the couch, a cup of something steaming in hand, without a care in the world. How dare he? I was half freezing to death in my house because the electric heat pump was not working while he was in a warm cozy home, no doubt with state-of-the-art heating equipment. One look at me, and he knew there would be hell to pay. John had promised to call the heating company while I was away; clearly, he hadn’t. I had been away for almost two years. How was I supposed to start scouting for new HVAC products for sale? John and I constantly communicated, and he assured me he was never late for heater maintenance. As things stood, I doubted that he called the heating technician even once. John was all smiles when he saw me as if he was expecting me. Still, why would he not? I had called prior and asked him to make sure the electric HVAC and the fireplace were working since I knew how the weather was at this time of year. I had no patience for pleasantries, and I asked him to call a repairman to come by my house for boiler repair. It shocked him, and he said it was strange given that he had an HVAC serviceman less than a week ago and he had serviced the electric heating system. He asked if I had reset the wireless thermostat before he tried to reach the HVAC specialist. That’s when I realized that I hadn’t quite inspected the heat pump installation, I had quickly jumped to conclusions. To save face I said I noticed it needed a new HEPA filter as well as energy-saving tips to survive the winter.
