Running my families business was always my dream.
I never really wanted to work for someone else and I always thought it would be an easy career to fall into.
My dad and grandfather always made it seem easy because they had great employees that made sure the business ran smoothly. Little did I know, they were just calm under pressure and it was a constant struggle to keep up with their competitors. After college, I started working with my dad at our HVAC dealer and repair business. I didn’t know anything about repairing the systems but I had graduated with a degree in business. I wanted to make a few changes to try and attract new customers. My dad told me that he wouldn’t allocate any more money from the budget for advertising because he felt it was a waste of money. He said the he and my grandfather had always gotten along just fine with the small ad he placed in the local paper once a month. I tried to explain the advantages of advertising online and placing ads on social media sites. I told him that today, people don’t even get the paper delivered like they used to and many people simply read the news online. I decided to place an add myself to show him how it worked. I paid a fee for a three month running ad that would appear to prospective customers in our area. My dad was surprised when he got a call just one week later from someone needing service. When the customer said that they had seen the ad for a special we were running online, my dad had to admit that maybe he needed to do more. At least he now knows that it is money well spent.
